Romeo CantuRomeo Cantu is an award-winning journalist who began his media career right here in the Rio Grande Valley, where he grew up. Along with his radio duties at KURV, Romeo is currently the Communications Director/Tax Sales Manager for the Perdue, Brandon, Fielder, Collins & Mott Law Firm in McAllen. For more than 20 years, he’s been in the broadcasting business and won several local, state and national journalism awards, including two Emmy nominations. He was even a big winner on “The Price Is Right!”

His professional career has taken him all across the U.S. border from Texas to California, where he’s worked for ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and CNN affiliates. His most recent television job was at KGBT-TV in Harlingen, where for six years he worked as a News Anchor, Weathercaster and Reporter. He moved back to the Valley from Houston in 2003, where he had worked as the Senior Online News Editor for Click2Houston.com, the Web site for KPRC-TV. While in the Bayou City, Romeo reported on Tropical Storm Allison, which killed 22 people and caused more than $5 billion in damage. His coverage on the storm and other stories earned Romeo several awards, including four Lone Star Awards and two Texas Associated Press Awards. Romeo grew up in San Juan, attended PSJA High School and the University of Texas in Austin, where he received a degree in journalism. His professional career began at KRGV-TV in Weslaco, where he was an assignment editor and producer. While in the Valley, he won his first Texas Associated Press Award for covering one of the worst school bus accidents in Texas history in Alton. From the Valley, Romeo headed back to Austin, where he worked as an associate producer for KXAN-TV. He then moved on to West Texas, where he was hired as a weekend anchor and reporter at KOSA-TV in Odessa, Texas. While he was there, Romeo also hosted a Latin variety show called "Tiempo Tejano." Romeo next left the Lone Star State and worked as a reporter for KOLD-TV in Tucson, Ariz. But he wouldn't be gone for long, returning to El Paso where he was hired as the weekend anchor and reporter at KTSM-TV. After covering several stories along the U.S./Mexico border in El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, Romeo headed west to the farthest point of the border -- San Diego, where he worked as a reporter at KUSI-TV. Romeo said that he’s been looking at the opportunity of working back home in the Valley for several years. "I've learned so much covering the 2,000-mile stretch of the border from Brownsville to San Diego, and have noticed one constant factor – that everyone has a story. As a journalist, I strive to be the storyteller that lets their voices be heard."
